Our UXCO Student residences in Bordeaux
Bordeaux is top of the rankings of cities where the French want to work!
UXCO Student chose south-west Bordeaux as the location for its Aquitaine student residence. It offers 106 rental apartments. A brand new residence, called Grenad’Inn and comprising accommodation for 118 people, will be opening its doors for the start of the 2021 academic year, right in the heart of Mériadeck. The exceptional geographical location and mild coastal climate of Bordeaux give the city's inhabitants a privileged environment nestled between beaches, pine forests and rows of grapevines.
LIFE IN BORDEAUX
The capital of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, Bordeaux is a city with a population of over 246,000. Located about 37 miles (60 kilometres) from the ocean on the river Gironde, which also gives its name to the département, and surrounded by protected natural areas, it is a flagship destination for tourists and students. And in 2016, the New York Times placed second in its list of unmissable cities to discover. Classy, right? Renowned for its fine wines, enjoyed all over the world, its UNESCO-listed port and its classical and contemporary architecture on show when you visit the Cathédrale Saint-André and Basilique de Saint-Michel, Bordeaux is a city full of surprises. Today, its fine-dining culture and abundance of artistic and cultural gems make it a symbol of the French way of life. A modern city that offers its inhabitants a dynamic lifestyle: a huge range of cultural offerings and sport and leisure opportunities, an eco-friendly public transport network, cutting-edge activities for mobile workers and the lifestyle typical of south-west France.
STUDENT LIFE IN BORDEAUX
Bordeaux recently climbed the ranking of the best cities for student life, being placed 7th in the 2020/2021 Ranking compiled by l’Étudiant. With a university located partially on the Pessac and Talence campuses and on 12 other sites, 3 IUTs (university institutes of technology), 8 engineering schools, 9 business schools and 14 other colleges of further education, this conurbation is undeniably attractive to young people, and the number of students drawn here continues to rise all the time. In terms of its cultural and lifestyle activities, Bordeaux very definitely no longer merits its reputation as a ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Those who enjoy the bar and restaurant scene are spoilt for choice: typical student areas such as the very popular alternative zone of Darwin, or Port de la Lune, the Bassins à Flot district or Quartier Bastide, for a calmer, more gentrified and hipster ambiance. For relaxing outings, you can saunter along the quayside of the left bank, or take a boat trip on the Garonne. And for roller-skating fans, a skating night is organised on the last Friday of every month ;)
What else is there around Bordeaux? Whether you're on a short placement or want to take a weekend break, the département of Gironde and the Nouvelle Aquitaine region offer a wide range of opportunities for excursions. You can enjoy the beautiful historic city centre, the banks of the Garonne, placed by UNESCO on its World Heritage of Humanity list in 2007, Atlantic beaches just an hour away, or perhaps set off on an adventure to explore the wine routes. You can also visit the main landmarks of the local area: the famous Dune du Pilat, Cap Ferret or the well-renowned seaside resort of Arcachon and its town centre.
