Faculté des Langues, Cultures et Sociétés de l'Université de Lille (FLCS)

The Faculty of Languages, Cultures and Societies was created in 2021 following the merger of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Letters and Civilizations and the U.F.R. des Langues Étrangères Appliquées. This makes our department one of the youngest within the University of Lille, but its origins go back much further. Located on two campuses, the Pont de Bois site in Villeneuve d'Ascq for the Languages, Humanities and Foreign Civilizations streams, and the Campus Gare site in Roubaix for the Applied Foreign Languages streams, the Faculty, along with the other components of the Arts, Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences domain, grew out of the Faculté des Lettres de Lille, created in 1887 when this faculty was transferred from Douai to Lille. At that time, existing language sections included English, German, Russian and Polish. Over time, the University (Lille until 1970, then Lille III from 1970 to 2017) added courses in Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese and Swedish.
