LIFE IN LIMOGES
With a population of around 140,000, Limoges is the second-biggest town in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, after Bordeaux. Famed for its enamels in the medieval west, it went on to gain international renown for its porcelain. It was recognised by UNESCO for the excellence of its artisanship when it designated it a Creative City in 2017. Its two-thousand-year heritage, which entitled it to be called a "City of Art and History" makes it a popular tourist destination. The city itself holds pleasant surprises. It is easy to find sports activities here, thanks to a range of facilities for 72 different disciplines, as well as a wealth of places for going out. Place Denis Dussoubs and Place Stalingrad, both near the residence, teem with cafés, bars and shops, where you can wander until you drop. As for public transport: There are 655 tangerine colour bikes; V'Lim bikes are available to rent in the city and the cost for students is just €1 per month. The STCL runs a very popular fleet of modern buses and eco-friendly trolley buses. So, Limoges is an affordable student city where life is good.
Indeed, the "porcelain capital" is on its way up, having climbed six places in the overall ranking of the best towns for students to live. 40% of its 17,698 students are from out of area, giving an idea of the attractiveness of this very ambitious city. And the University of Limoges has a demonstrable record of innovation. It is composed of five faculties, three schools of engineering, a University Technology Institute, a University Institute of Teacher Training, a National Graduate School of Arts, eight thematic doctoral schools and four research institutes. It has a 15,000-m2 French-language multimedia library.
Getting bored in Limoges? You know you shouldn't pay heed to gossip...
When it comes to leisure, Limoges is a delight to the students who move there: 24 cinemas, five cultural centres, a music conservatory, two museums, theatres, concert and exhibition halls and modern, recently-built sports facilities.
What else is there around Limoges? The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region has many options for excursions: you could go to visit Mortemart, one of the most beautiful villages in France, go on an expedition to Monts de Blonds to discover its standing stones and dolmens, walk in the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park or enjoy a range of water activities on Lake Vassivière.
